Why The Mountain Guide School?

  • Focused on Practical, Skills Based Learning. We place a lot of emphasis on learning and actual use of skills. We use a combination of sit down and practical classes to teach you these skills along the way, and then you get to use them throughout the training, in context, many times over, so your learning makes the transition from learning to knowing.
  • Work with Actual Clients. Many "guide training" programs at universities and other companies have you work with other trainee guides who pretend to be clients. But much of being a good guide is about knowing and anticipating the needs of your clients, and you just can't fake being new at something. As such, we spend a full 9 months of the program working with real clients, helping you develop a deep knowledge of thier needs.
  • Small group size. We have a maximum of six trainees per year. That means lots of individual attention.
  • Our Instructors. We love what we do. We are instructors because we think it’s the best job in the world and because we get to take people to amazing places and teach them skills to undertake a lifetime of mountaineering adventures. We're all climbers in our off time, honing our craft all over the world. Also, we are all certified Mountaineering Guide Trainers, Wilderness First Responders, and certified Leave No Trace practitioners.
  • The Mountains and Glaciers of Patagonia. The Patagonian Ice Cap is an incredible classroom, home to some of the most remote, challening, and breathtaking scenery on Earth. Alaska isn't too shabby either.
  • Earn Real Certifications. Graduates of the Mountain Guide School will have earned a WEA Mountain Instructor certification, an Avalanche certification, a Wilderness First Responder certification, and a Leave No Trace Instructor certification. Together, you are ready to begin a career guiding.
  • Strong Commitment to Safety. We balance pushing towards a goal while keeping personal and group safety at the forefront of everything we do. We strive to help our trainees develop a strong sense of leadership, and encourage good decision making. All of this helps to make you a stronger, more rounded guide.
